The cover star of the October 2012 issue of Sound+Vision Magazine, The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Turntable (Black) impressed the magazine so much not just with its affordable price, but its great performance, which came strikingly close to that of a $2000 turntable they had recently reviewed. Much of the credit goes to the Pro-Ject’s tonearm, which is made of carbon fiber, a material found in high-performance products of all types, high-end audio products included. With its Ortofon 2M Black cartridge preinstalled, setting up the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Turntable (Black) couldn’t be easier; it also provides RCA output jacks so you can easily swap out cables if needed.

The sound? Sound+Vision Magazine characterized the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Turntable (Black) as "vibrant," "coherent," and "mega-gorgeous." About the only criticism they had was of the bass, which seemed to lack a bit of oomph on rock tracks as compared with other turntables. With the vinyl renaissance still going strong, products like the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Turntable provide an excellent entry point for those seeking a first turntable, or to replace the one they’ve had boxed up in storage since the mid-1980s. Another irresistable plus: it comes in your choice of eight colors!

The original Pro-Ject Debut was released in the late 1990’s during a time when CD was king, and the vinyl format was presumed to be all but gone. But well over a decade later the model still stands, and it deserves a key accreditation in the ongoing success of a rejuvenated vinyl and budget turntable market. The Debut symbolises all that is good about the vinyl market; it is easy to set-up and fantastic to listen to, with the right mixture of user-friendliness and opportunity to tweak and upgrade.

At the beginning of 2012, the new Debut Carbon expands on the Debut III in a variety of ways; namely the inclusion of an 8.6? carbon fibre tonearm, a sorbothane-damped counterweight, 12? platter, added motor isolation and rear-mounted junction box.

The Debut Carbon also sees the re-introduction of the Debut’s famous colours! Not only is the Debut Carbon available in the gloss black finish as standard, but for the same cost you can also choose to have a statement-making Black, Blue, Green, Yellow, White or Silver gloss finish.
